Join the Observer Corps

The League of Women Voter’s Observer Corps is a group of volunteers who agree to attend and observe public meetings. The Observer Corps provides a structured way for citizens to exercise their right to know while providing a valuable service to the community. Observer Corps:

  • help ensure that citizens are aware of decisions that impact their lives – how those decisions are made and how citizens can have input on those decisions;

  • promote government transparency and accountability; and

  • help Local Leagues tie their program planning and advocacy work to timely issues that are relevant to their community.

In Texas and Beyond!

As Lavaca County League members, we are also members of the League of Women Voters of Texas and the League of the Women Voters of the United States. via our relationship with the state and national Leagues, we have the opportunity to tap into to fabulous information and be powerful, informed advocates on League positions.

The League of Women Voters of Texas has used an impressive, bottom-up grassroots process to develop positions on a number of important issues - and volunteer Issue Chairs work hard to track pending legislation in the Texas legislature. The Issue Chairs update the League membership on their work with regular blog posts when the legislature is in session. They also let League members know when contacting elected officials to support or oppose legislation is most timely via Action Alerts.

You can join with 8000 League members in Texas who are working to make democracy work by:

  • Following the work of Issue Chairs

  • Responding to Action Alerts with the one-click forms that make contacting your elected officials quick and easy.

  • Learning what it takes to become an Issue Chair. Contact LWV Lavaca County as the first step to learn more.
